Fitting a SmartCode 917 below an existing deadbolt
A SmartCode 917 may fit below many Kwikset SmartCode deadbolts when the existing door has the specified hole spacing. Product names alone do not prove the two assemblies will clear each other. Check the door and dimension guide together.
Measure the existing preparation
Kwikset specifies standard preparation with the two holes 5½ inches apart. Measure the existing door before buying hardware; the apparent gap between decorative covers does not necessarily describe the underlying hole spacing.
Preserve the manufacturer's qualification
The support answer applies to most Kwikset SmartCode deadbolts. It does not identify every deadbolt as compatible. Record both model numbers and compare their dimensions rather than treating the Kwikset brand name as a universal fit statement.
Plan around the finished assemblies
Consult the linked dimension guide to determine whether the door can accommodate both locks. Include the inside hardware in the fit check and avoid drilling a new opening until the complete layout has been confirmed.

Use the dimension guide to identify the specified measurement between the existing bored holes. A tape measurement between decorative edges is a different dimension. Photograph the interior as well as the exterior so the installer can assess assembly clearance. Keep the exact deadbolt model with the measurements; the manufacturer's qualification refers to many compatible installations, not every product with a Kwikset name.
Resolve fit before altering the door
Check the complete preparation requirements and the finished hardware footprint before drilling or ordering a second assembly. Decorative trim, existing damage and the actual door construction can affect the installation. If the spacing does not match the instructions, ask for a suitable alternative or an assessed modification plan. Do not force parts into contact simply because the mounting screws can be started.
