A Kwikset lever falls off but the set screw seems missing
On the Kwikset lever arrangement described by its support page, the retaining screw can remain in the shaft when the handle comes off. Inspect the shaft before ordering a replacement screw or assuming the complete lock must be replaced.
Look at both sides of the shaft
Kwikset describes a hole on one side and a silver part on the opposite side; that silver part is the set screw. Its location can make it appear missing when viewed only from the handle opening.
Use the specified fastening arrangement
The manufacturer describes refitting the lever and tightening the retaining screw through the lever and shaft with a 3/32-inch hex wrench. Match the hardware to the guide before following that procedure; similar-looking handles can fasten differently.
Separate loose parts from damage
A screw that will not retain the handle may involve damaged threads or a damaged shaft, which this simple support procedure does not diagnose. Note whether the lever slips off again and arrange assessment if secure attachment cannot be restored.
Check the shaft before searching for a lost screw
On the arrangement shown by Kwikset, the retaining screw can be in the shaft rather than loose inside the fallen lever. Compare the shaft and release features with the manufacturer's illustration. Keep the detached lever and any loose pieces together. If your hardware does not match the illustrated mechanism, identify the exact model before applying its fastening procedure.
Confirm retention as well as door operation
After the correct lever is seated and retained according to the instructions, check that it stays attached during ordinary use. Then test latch retraction and normal closing with the door open initially. A lever that repeatedly comes loose may need assessment of damaged or mismatched parts. More force on a small retaining screw is not a substitute for identifying why the connection will not hold.
