Why the Kwikset app requests precise location

Kwikset identifies two uses for precise location: determining the time zone during new-lock activation and operating Auto-Unlock by Distance. The permission needed during setup is therefore different from the ongoing requirement for that optional geofencing feature.

During activation

The manufacturer says precise location can be disabled after a new lock has been added. If you only want to complete setup, distinguish that temporary requirement from the permissions needed for any location-based feature you later enable.

When using arrival-based unlocking

Auto-Unlock by Distance requires continuing precise-location access. Changing that permission can affect the feature even if ordinary app controls still work. Check the permission alongside the feature setting when describing inconsistent arrival behavior.

Understand the published data statement

Kwikset says the location information used for these operations stays on the phone rather than being transferred to its backend. That statement concerns the described location data; it should not be expanded into a claim that the whole app collects no information.

Decide whether you want arrival-based unlocking

Identify the feature you are enabling before changing phone permissions. Location used to establish a time zone during activation has a different purpose from ongoing distance-based Auto-Unlock. Read the model's feature requirements and consider how each household member uses the entrance. Do not grant a permission simply because another lock owner's phone uses it; match the function you intend to operate.

Evaluate permissions and access as separate settings

Check the phone's permission wording and the current Kwikset instructions together. If arrival behavior changes after a phone setting is edited, record that sequence when troubleshooting. Review account ownership and enrolled users separately from location permissions. A phone privacy setting does not by itself describe who holds a physical key or who can enter a valid keypad code.

Before you call

  • Separate activation from optional geofencing.
  • Keep required permissions enabled for arrival-based unlocking.
  • Read the current app privacy information for broader data questions.

Follow-up questions

Why would setup need location if I do not want Auto-Unlock?

Kwikset identifies time-zone determination during activation as a separate use. Follow the setup requirements for your model, then review the optional feature's ongoing needs.

Does the location explanation describe all app data handling?

No. It addresses the location uses in that support article. Consult the current privacy policy for broader account and data questions.
