Car keys
The key opens the door but the car will not start
Mechanical door access does not establish electronic starting authorization. Describe whether the engine cranks, what message appears and how a spare behaves. A locksmith needs those details before deciding whether the problem concerns the key, its programming or another vehicle fault.

Separate the functions you tested
Did the metal blade open the door, did remote buttons unlock it, or did proximity entry work? Those are different observations. Explain which key was used and keep other smart keys away when comparing their behavior.
Report the vehicle's response
A silent start attempt, cranking without starting and a key-detection warning are not interchangeable symptoms. Note the exact message without assuming its cause. If the vehicle battery is weak, that may also affect what the electronics report.
Agree on diagnosis before replacement
A new fob is not a universal cure for a no-start condition. Ask the provider to explain what they can test and which faults require another automotive specialist. If programming is performed, verify starting with each retained key independently.
Describe the dashboard response without interpreting it
Record the exact message or security indicator, whether the engine cranks and whether a known working spare behaves differently. Also mention a recent battery issue, key repair or programming visit. These observations help the provider choose the right diagnostic path. A blade turning a door cylinder establishes mechanical fit there; it does not identify why the vehicle refuses to start.
Separate the proposed diagnosis from parts replacement
Ask what testing will distinguish a key problem from a vehicle-side fault and what the appointment includes if no replacement key is needed. If a new key is supplied, confirm engine starting, remote functions and the cut blade individually. Keep the diagnosis with the invoice so the next provider does not repeat a key replacement when the remaining problem is elsewhere.
Before you call
- Identify which door-access method worked
- Record the exact dashboard response
- Compare a known working spare
- Ask for diagnosis before buying a new fob
Follow-up questions
Does a security light always mean the key needs programming?
It is a relevant symptom, not a complete diagnosis. Report the exact light behavior and vehicle details so the correct system can be assessed.
What if the spare opens the door but also will not start?
Tell the technician both keys behave the same way. The shared symptom is useful evidence and should be assessed before assuming two replacement keys are necessary.
