Car key cutting vs. programming: what each does
Cutting creates the blade shape that works a mechanical lock. Programming establishes the electronic relationship required by a compatible transponder or smart key. Many replacement jobs need both, and a quote for only one may not produce a fully usable key.
What the blade does
The blade may operate an ignition, a door or an emergency cylinder, depending on the vehicle. Matching the broad shape of a key blank is not enough: the blade profile and cut pattern must fit the relevant lock. A blade should operate smoothly without forcing it.
What the electronics do
Remote buttons, immobilizer recognition and proximity starting are related but distinct functions. A remote that locks the doors is not necessarily authorized to start the engine. Ask which functions are included rather than accepting the vague description 'programmed key.'
Compare complete quotes
Tell both providers the same vehicle and key information. Ask about the supplied part, cutting, programming, emergency blade, mobile visit and any additional work identified during diagnosis. A lower initial figure may describe fewer services rather than a better price for the same result.
Use a function list when comparing prices
Write down door access, ignition turning, engine starting and remote operation as separate requirements. Ask which are included in the quoted key. A blade-only price should not be compared with a complete smart key, and an electronic enrollment price may exclude cutting. For a customer-supplied part, confirm who supplies the blade and who checks the electronics before cutting makes the part harder to return.
What a successful handover looks like
Try the mechanical key gently in the intended lock and test electronic functions independently of other keys. If the blade works but the engine does not start, report that specific mismatch. If starting works but a button does not, identify the button rather than calling the whole key bad. The difference helps the provider determine whether to inspect the cut, configuration or electronics.

Does every metal car key need programming?
No. A plain mechanical key and a key containing a transponder have different requirements. The metal blade alone does not identify the complete key system.
