Car key will not turn: what to tell a locksmith
Stop forcing a key that will not turn. Describe whether the problem began suddenly, whether a spare behaves differently and whether the key is bent or worn. A sticking ignition needs diagnosis before deciding between a new key, repair or replacement hardware.
Preserve the evidence
Keep the original key and any broken pieces. A close photo can show visible wear, but a photo cannot establish the internal condition of the ignition. Note whether the key enters fully and whether the problem also occurs in a door lock.
Separate the possible repairs
A damaged key and a damaged ignition are different faults. Replacing a shell will not repair a worn blade, and programming will not fix a mechanically jammed cylinder. Ask the technician to explain the observed cause and proposed work.
Confirm the key system after repair
An ignition replacement can affect how the ignition and door keys match. Ask whether the finished repair will retain one-key convenience and whether any programming is required. Test the repaired operation several times before accepting the job.
Separate a turning fault from a starting fault
Explain whether the key will insert fully, whether the cylinder will rotate and whether the engine then attempts to start. These are different symptoms. Note whether a known working spare behaves the same way and whether the issue changes with the vehicle's normal steering-lock or gear-selector position. Follow the vehicle manual for ordinary operation; do not use extra leverage to make the key turn.
Ask how the repair affects the rest of the key set
If ignition hardware needs replacement, ask whether the repaired ignition and existing door lock will share a key afterward. Also ask whether electronic enrollment is involved. A mechanical repair may solve the rotation problem without addressing an unrelated remote fault. Have the final invoice identify the work completed so future service starts with an accurate repair history.
