Obsidian has no keyhole: how dead-battery access works
Kwikset Obsidian provides external terminals for temporary power from a 9V battery. That power does not replace authentication: a valid user code is still required. This method addresses depleted internal batteries, not every possible lock fault.
Find the emergency power connection
The terminals are beneath the touchscreen. Kwikset instructs maintaining battery contact while the screen wakes, the valid code is entered and the motor retracts the bolt. Intermittent contact can interrupt the intended sequence.
Keep the code requirement clear
A battery is a power source, not an override credential. If the code is unknown or rejected, describe that separately when requesting authorized help. Avoid repeatedly treating an access-code problem as a dead-battery problem.
Restore normal power after entry
Replace the internal batteries immediately after entering, following the installation guide. The external battery is part of the entry procedure; it does not complete the internal battery replacement or confirm that another electrical fault is absent.
Prepare the emergency supplies before you need them
Keep the documented 9V temporary-power method and a valid user code available to the authorized household. A battery stored only inside the locked property may be inaccessible during the situation it is meant to address. Know where the exterior terminals are without experimenting on another model's hardware. Follow the Obsidian instructions rather than applying an improvised power supply.
Separate power recovery from successful authentication
Temporary external power allows the documented entry process; it does not supply a forgotten code. If the screen wakes but entry fails, describe that difference to support. Once inside, restore the specified internal batteries and test normal operation. If fresh internal power does not restore reliable use, investigate the remaining problem before assuming the emergency battery has permanently repaired the lock.
