Car keys

Lost all your car keys in Sacramento? Start here

When every car key is missing, ask for an all-keys-lost service rather than a spare-key quote. The technician needs the vehicle's identity, ignition type, location and authorization before confirming the correct replacement and programming approach.

Separate access from starting the car

Opening a locked door and making a key that starts the engine are separate services. A metal blade may operate a mechanical lock while the immobilizer still requires a correctly programmed chip or smart key. Tell dispatch whether the doors are locked as well as whether any working key remains.

Have the vehicle details ready

Provide the year, make and model, and say whether the ignition turns with a key or uses a start button. A photo of an old spare or key label can help if available. Do not post your VIN and ownership documents in a public review or comment; share necessary information directly with the service provider.

Ask about the complete result

Confirm whether the estimate includes the key, cutting, programming, emergency blade and any vehicle-specific authorization or code charges. Before the appointment ends, test starting and the agreed remote functions. Ask separately whether a missing key can be removed from the vehicle's electronic memory.

What can change an all-keys-lost appointment?

A locked vehicle, an unreadable key identification, missing ownership documents and an unsafe parking position are different obstacles. Tell the provider which apply before dispatch. Ask whether the appointment includes entry, a cut emergency blade, electronic enrollment and removal of missing keys where supported. A replacement that starts the engine may still leave an uncut blade or an untested remote function.

What should you check before the technician leaves?

Test the supplied key with other working keys away from the vehicle so another fob cannot mask a problem. Check the door, starting and each supplied button that your vehicle supports. Ask what happens if the original key is later found. Keep the part description and receipt together; these are more useful for a future spare than a photograph of the outer shell alone.

Before you call

  • Exact parked location and safe access
  • Year, make, model and ignition type
  • Photo ID and authorization documents requested by dispatch
  • Total estimate and any limitations before work

Follow-up questions

Can the car stay where it is parked?

Often, if the vehicle and job are supported and the location is accessible. An underground garage, restricted lot or unsafe roadside position may change the arrangements.

Does an all-keys-lost price include a spare?

Do not assume so. Request separate totals for one usable replacement and for a replacement plus a spare during the same appointment.
